Country Chic Kids Room

A beautiful bedroom for two

My daughters are growing up, and they have outgrown their room. I have changed their bedroom three times now, all of which were necessary for the different stages of their lives.

I enjoyed creating Rem’s nursery during my nesting period and then changing the room to fit both of them once my youngest, Reagan, was old enough to leave the crib. This latest change was to give them each their own space and to allow for storage.

We wanted to surprise our girls with a bedroom makeover for Christmas, so we sent them to Grandma’s and started taking down the old bunk bed we had made. We also gave the room a fresh coat of paint with an off-white.

I ordered matching beds from Jensen Stores in Estherville, IA. They are twin-sized frames with bookshelves.  -Oliah Twin Bookcase Storage Bed

I ordered bedding and wall decor that would accompany my Country Girl theme. My girls show livestock (cattle and goats), so we wanted to showcase that in their room. I ordered some great decor pieces from Target to go with the custom pieces I had made, along with an Aztec rug.

Santa brought the girls each an adorable doll to go with their beds as well.

When I was first designing the girls’ room, I envisioned florals and western patterns. I worked with Laurie Truesdell to pick out the perfect fabrics and to create these beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilts that my girls can cherish for a lifetime.

My sewing and quilting skills are minimal, so I wanted to use an expert. Laurie’s work is beautiful, and they were the perfect touch for the room! I kept the rest of the room, and the other bedding toned down so they could stand out.

I remember when I was my girl’s age, and my grandma made my first quilt that I was absolutely in love with- a horse quilt!

For the base of the bed, I wanted something simple and easy to make. My girls haven’t quite taken up the art of cleaning their room yet. To keep my sanity, I purchased Beddy’s for each bed.

Beddy’s is a zip of bedding that basically turns your bed into a stylish sleeping bag. When your kid gets up in the morning, they just zip up their bed! The inside is minky and has a built-in sheet on the base. It can easily be taken off and thrown in the wash when needed.

I bought some textured throw pillows from Beddy’s and Target to finish the beds. I also purchased white, plush pillow chairs so the girls could sit up and read.

I kept their dressers, which were my husband’s growing up ( I had previously painted them this soft aqua color.) I also incorporated pieces I have made for earlier issues of the magazine. Check out the book tower and the toy box!

The best part of the remodel has been watching my girls enjoy it. It is truly their space to unwind and be creative. They are best friends and love to read together and just hang out.
